The Mercedarian monastery, located on the outskirts of the city, was not damaged by the fire started by its governor, Juan Pérez de Guzmán.
The building's good condition and its location led the pirates to occupy the Mercedarian temple for a month as their headquarters and an improvised prison for their prisoners.
On January 21, 1673, following the 1671 pirate attack, Panama City was relocated to a more protected and easily defensible peninsula.
