As the landmark of the city of Torgau, Torgau Castle is internationally associated with the end of World War II through the encounter between the Allied forces. On April 25, 1945, the Red Army and the US armed forces clashed near Torgau. The photograph of the handshake between an American and Soviet soldier in Torgau gained worldwide fame and continues to exert a symbolic significance that is internationally recognized today.

The memory of this encounter is kept alive on the so-called "Elbe Day." Furthermore, the "Memorial of Encounter" stands between the castle and the Elbe River, flanked by flagpoles on the other side of the Elbe. The old Elbe Bridge was blown up during the war. Some sandstone from this bridge was incorporated into the vault of the lower church of the Dresden Frauenkirche, which was also destroyed in 1945 and re-consecrated in 2005.
