The College was founded in 1948 by Rabbi Dr. Kopel Rosen. It was the first and only Jewish Public School in the UK. The College closed in 1997.

Carmel College was run as a Jewish boarding school for almost 50 years from 1948. On the site, there is a distinctive synagogue built in concrete with stained glass windows created by Israeli artist Nehemia Azaz.
The school has featured in various films and TV series such as Agatha Christie's The Mouse Trap, The Iron Lady, The Darkest Dawn, Annihilation and This Little Drummer Girl. Kylie Minogue and the Kaiser Chiefs also shot music videos here.
