Escampo Barriou Point is the southwest projection of the peninsula. Its Provençal name (barrels escaped) comes from the fact that barrels transported by sea sometimes overturned at this point where the chop and swell are very confusing and disrupt the ships. Another theory is that barrels that fell into the water on a windy day ended up at the bottom of the cove. They were then recovered by Arbanese who were eventually sent to the penal colony.
