Historical context: Saint-Vanne was the main religious institution in Verdun and was located a few hundred metres from Notre-Dame Cathedral, on the heights of the city. A basilica guarded the tombs of the first bishops, who were recognised as saints. In the 9th century, the institution was organised as a chapter and transformed into a Benedictine monastery around 951-952.
