The church of Samogneux was completely destroyed on 21 February 1916 during the Battle of Verdun. In 1930, it was decided to rebuild it, in the middle of the village, opposite the town hall.

The reconstruction was made possible by a generous American donor, Mrs Horace GRAY. The latter was very moved by the book by the writer Henri FREMONT, in which he describes the life of refugees from the Meuse during the First World War. This work was translated and marketed in the United States. The funds raised made it possible to rebuild the church. The building is located near the newly created green route along the Meuse Canal, along the battlefields of the First World War and Verdun.

The church contains paintings by Lucien Lantier, a famous reconstruction artist who worked in several rebuilt churches on the battlefield. There is also a bronze statue in tribute to chaplain Mathews Cleveland.
