The so-called "Tannenburg" stands in the Knickhagen area of Heiligenstadt. Since the construction of the city wall in 1227, a building here served as the commandant's post. This section of the city wall was surrounded by fir trees, which is probably why the name "Tannenburg" came about in popular parlance. The outpost had a defensive tower, the foundations of which are still preserved today. After the Thirty Years' War, the building was converted into a residential building.
The small property, consisting of a residential building and a stable, was inhabited until shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Later, the Tannenburg was to serve as the town's information center. In 1993, Dr. Werner Freund purchased the building from the town. The half-timbered house had to be completely demolished because it was partially dilapidated and still damaged from the last war. After the city wall was renovated in 1996, the foundation for the new building was laid the following year.
Today, the Tannenburg houses the Italian restaurant "Al Castello."
