Imhotep was a fascinating historical figure – originally the architect of Djoser's Step Pyramid, he was later worshipped in ancient Egypt as a god of healing and medicine. Because of his popularity, there wasn't just one temple, but several cult sites (Asklepieia) dedicated to him.

Imhotep was a high official during the 3rd Dynasty, who served King Djoser (c. 2686-2667. BC) and is credited with building Djoser's step pyramid in Saqqara.
By the Ptolemaic Period, Imhotep was worshipped as a god. The Greeks admired his reputation as a physician, leading them to identify him with Asclepius, who was their god of medicine.
It is believed that Ptolemy V (204-180 BC) may have dedicated this temple to Imhotep as thanks for the birth of his son, the future Ptolemy VI.
