The old dam was put into operation in 1902, is almost 2km long and was made of granite. It was the largest structure at the time. By 1933 it had been expanded to a height of 36m.
The dam allowed the fertile Nile mud to pass through during floods and was intended to ensure that Egypt's fields could be irrigated all year round. The dam proved to be too small for this.
The dam can be seen clearly from the Isis Temple.
