The church was built after the medieval marlstone church collapsed during a storm in 1843. The church houses several sights, such as the 13th century 'wooden cross of Catsop' and a 'St. Anna te Drieën' by the Master of Elsloo (16th century). This church was built by the residents from home-baked bricks next to the collapsed 15th century marlstone church. To the left of the main entrance is the entrance to a separate Maria devotional chapel (freely accessible).

This church, a so-called Waterstaatskerk, was built in 1848 on the same spot where the church stood that was struck by lightning and burned down a few years earlier. The tower clock, rescued from the rubble of the old collapsed church, sounds the time every half hour. The tower stands on the highest point of the old village centre of Elsloo and can be recognised from a great distance.
