Improperly called Borgo Cusenza today, this place was already mentioned by Cordici (1586-1666) as “Bagghiu di l’Acci” and it read as follows:
“Our territory has no equal that makes the meat of the cattle that graze there sweeter to the taste of this fego (fief). Below it sinks a very spacious underground cavern with a pool of water, which drips and becomes impetrated and the candles remain like white wax attached to the bed.”

There is news that this place was inhabited by the Cusenza family of San Vito Lo Capo already in 1820 (Vincenzo Cusenza), but perhaps it can be traced back to an older date. This village was called Bagghiu di l’Acci for the nearby Monte Acci (829 m.) and the inhabitants took the nickname of accialori. In more remote times, and until 1920/30 the Cusenza family lived in the village all year round. Afterwards it was only inhabited seasonally, in fact the women and children went up from San Vito to the Borgo in the summer and stayed until December, the time of sowing wheat.
Even the men, once the sowing was over, went down to the village in turns so as not to leave the village unattended and went up whenever they had to work in the fields. Only the shepherds were sedentary. About 14 families lived in the village for a total number of about 40 people including women and children. It was a patriarchal society based on self-sufficiency.
