The fountain (17th-18th century) is one of the most characteristic in the city and is simply called Il Mascherone by the people of Spoleto, due to the imposing human mask crowned with laurel from whose mouth a strong jet of water comes out. An inscription informs of a restoration carried out in 1736 on the aedicule that frames the basin and the mask, which are actually from the 17th century. On the right is another small fountain bearing the inscription BIBE VIATOR, an invitation to quench one’s thirst at its very fresh waters addressed to the traveler.
