The Max Clemens Canal was the ambitious project of the two Prince-Bishops of Münster, Clemens August I of Bavaria and Max Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfeld. The canal was intended to connect Münster with the waterways of the Netherlands. Construction began in 1724, but since operation proved uneconomical even during the construction phase, freight traffic on the existing section was finally discontinued in 1840. Canal Street in Münster runs straight along the old canal.

Today, there is a 38 km long cycle path along the canal from Münster to Wettringen. max-clemens-kanal.de/de
