The name Grote Kerk (Great Church) is no exaggeration in this case. Its imposing appearance can be seen from afar. The first church was founded in 1332, and in 1470 it was expanded into the building we know today. Over the centuries, the church has served not only its religious function but also many other purposes, such as a military hospital and a beggar's workshop. During the Walcheren flood (1944) and the North Sea flood (1953), it was even used as an emergency shelter for livestock. Church treasures and historical ornaments have disappeared over time, but remnants of old gravestones can still be seen in the windows. Today, the story of Grote Kerk Veere is brought to life through an Experience, an interactive experience using the latest technology. The church is also used as a venue for music, visual arts, literature, dance, and theater, and can be rented for events.

The colossal Church of Our Lady, or Great Church, is located in the historic center of Veere. Consecrated in 1543, the church symbolizes the history of the small, ancient port town. However, the tower was never completed, and over time, the church's treasures disappeared from the building. In 1809, it was shelled by the British fleet, and in 1811, the French converted it into a hospital for wounded soldiers. They installed nine wooden floors in the space. The Gothic windows were bricked up. A period of decline followed. To save the building from demolition, the state purchased the Grote Kerk of Veere in 1881, making it the first national monument in the Netherlands. Since then, the monument has been under the care of the Government Buildings Agency.
