At the center of the 296-hectare Elmpter Schwalmbruch nature reserve lies a large moor, a relic of the once extensive fens along the Schwalm River.

As you enter the drier areas of the area, you can hike around the largest juniper heath on the left bank of the Lower Rhine. Along the Schwalm River, the paths lead past ancient alder swamp forests and fragrant bog myrtle. Bentheim sheep graze the heathland, and during the mating season in early spring, hundreds of frogs and toads can be seen in the waters. From April onward, meadowfoam blooms in the swamp forests, and in late summer, common heather and cross-leaved heather bloom. With a bit of luck, you might even see and hear the nightjar, a rare bird species, at dusk.
