A church in Obervolkach was first mentioned in 1443. The document declares the village to be a parish. The chapel-like church had low, narrow window reveals and was a fortified church surrounded by Gaden.

In 1614, during the tenure of Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, a pointed helmet was put on and the nave extended. This is indicated by the weathered inscription above the portal: "Bishop Julius in the regiment / commendably celebrating the 40th year / brings religion again, / and with the help of his subject / he restores the church, / also repairs the school building, / everything like that only for happiness and blessings / the faithful prince does God give ".

An external staircase was built in 1774 to access the gallery.

The neo-Gothic altars were removed in 1953. In 1976 the area of the church was expanded by two thirds, it was given a more modern heating system and was consecrated again in 1977.

Prince-Bishop Julius Echter renovated the fortified church surrounded by Gaden in 1614. In 1953 the neo-Gothic altars were removed. In 1976/1977 the area of the church was expanded by two thirds and the interior was completely redesigned. The village church preserves three valuable works of art from the late Gothic period: a Maria with child (around 1510). Pope Urban I, patron saint of winegrowers (around 1490) and Johannes d. T. (around 1500). Above the high altar is a stone trinity group, a so-called mercy seat, by the Würzburg sculptor Sonnleitner (1954).
