The Villa Waldheim, also known as the Palace of the Princesses, was built in 1909 near Monrepos Castle. It was the residence of the widow of Wilhelm zu Wied's widow and their daughters the princesses Elisabeth and Luise. Since 1988 the palace has been the seat of the Monrepos Ice Age Museum.

The "scientific nucleus" of today's research center and museum lies in the discovery and research of important Paleolithic sites in the Neuwied basin (e.g. Niederbieber, Gönnersdorf, Bad Breisig) since the late 1960s. In 1986 the research area Paleolithic of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum was founded, which finally moved into the renovated palace in 1988. At the same time as the move, the Ice Age Archeology Museum was set up and opened.
