    Centovalli Railway
The international narrow-gauge railway Locarno - Domodossola - the Centovalli Railway
To get from the Swiss canton of Ticino to the canton of Valais or further to Geneva, the Direttissima is the route from Locarno to Domodossola in Italy and from there north through the Simplon to Brig. As a result, a treaty was concluded between Switzerland and Italy in November 1918 on the use of the route - to this day, Swiss tickets are accepted on the Italian section from the border at Camedo via Domodossola and from there on the Simplon route to the border at Iselle station, e.g. the general subscription or the half-fare ticket.

      Centovalli Railway
From Locarno, the route first runs to Ponte Brolla through the Maggia Valley, which branched off from Ponte Brolla and was once accessed by the Maggia Valley Railway (Locarno-Ponte Brolla-Bignasco Railway, abbreviated to LPB). It then travels through the actual Centovalli to the Italian border. From the border to Domodossola, the route runs through the Valle Vigezzo and the Centovalli Railway is therefore also known as Vigezzina in Italian territory. However, the name Centovalli Railway has been established for the entire railway line.
The initiative to build the Centovalli Railway came from the mayor of Locarno, Francesco Balli, at the end of the 19th century, who was also responsible for the construction of the Maggia Valley Railway, which was closed in the 1960s, and the still active funicular railway in Locarno up to Madonna del Sasso. After delays caused by World War I, the construction work that began in 1912 was successfully completed with the opening on November 25, 1923.
