To the left of the Rhine there was a quartzite reef, which the Rhine crossed. The reef formed a natural weir that dammed the Rhine above and evened out the differences in the gradient.
The place only became generally passable for shipping in the 17th century. It was successfully possible to blast a notch into the rock barrier - today's Binger Loch. Today, three rocks from the reef remain in the river, the Lochsteine.
The Rhine has a very strong current due to the narrow section.
