The White Buses are the rescue operation that, under the leadership of the Swedish Count Folke Bernadotte, brought Danish and Norwegian prisoners home from German concentration camps in buses during the final phase of World War II. They were painted white with red crosses on the roof, sides, front and back, so that they would not be confused with military vehicles. After Danish/Norwegian pressure and planning, approximately 15,000 Scandinavians and others were rescued from the camps in the German-controlled areas by the Swedish Red Cross in March and April 1945. After the German capitulation, approximately 10,000 more were rescued in May and June 1945.
