A surprising discovery was made in 1932 in the Grünhof Tesperhude district. During the demolition of a Bronze Age burial mound four burials from the Middle Bronze Age were found. The age of the graves is estimated to be around 1200 BC.

Under the direction of the archaeologist Karl Kersten, while the burial mound was being removed, rectangular stone packings with post holes and two hollows containing remains of tree coffins with the relics of a young woman and her small child were discovered. Further research indicates that a house of the dead made of field stone, wood and plastered wattle walls was built over the graves. The house was burned and a mound of earth was raised over the remains.
The house of the dead in Grünhof Tesperhude is the only known grave from this time north of the Elbe.
The Bronze Age burial site can be viewed at any time.

The graves are located near the B5 towards Lauenburg. Shortly after the Grünhof district, turn left into the forest. The grave site is signposted. Direct access by car is not possible.
