Ho Chi Minh, after being appointed president of North Vietnam, did not want to live in the grand luxurious presidential palace. From 1954 to 1958 he lived and worked in the modest "House 54", a house for employees of the presidential villa.
Inspired by a visit to northwestern Vietnam, he built a new "Presidential Palace" in the pile-building style of the northern ethnic peoples. Here, "Uncle Ho" spent his life as a Vietnamese president until his death in 1969.
