Until the 1950s, the forest here was used as natural pasture for livestock. However, it was not cleared for this purpose, but was left to exist as a virgin forest.
Today, wild horses ensure that plants that are not useful for the forest quickly disappear.

The wild horses are in the fenced-in forest for a specific purpose: they are to eat the plants in the pasture, which the dry European heath prevents from growing.
