"Daedalus" and "Icarus" shine in competition with the sun
Karl Heinz Zwick and Bernd Mohr designed the Sparkasse's two flying "golden donkeys" based on models from Greek mythology
Bright sunshine accompanied the many guests to Eschbach on the Whitsun weekend. It is difficult to estimate how many people ultimately made their way through the wine route and the small alleys of the 750-year-old wine town to see the colorful Eschbach donkeys. The streets were full of people on all five days.
Two silent observers watched the lively activity from a lofty height, and they could provide information about who was there at the anniversary: the two "golden donkeys" who, with their wings ready to take off, watched the whole colorful hustle and bustle up close on the sandstone walls directly at the festival site. They will not, however, reveal their secret. However, Marktplatz regional wants to reveal today how the "flying donkeys" came about.
"The Sparkasse Südliche Weinstraße in Landau also wanted to take part in the donkey project. That's why we gave the municipality of Eschbach two donkeys. The question was: who will paint the animals for us? Karl Heinz Zwick has been a member of the Sparkasse's art advisory board for years and is an advisor to the district for art and culture. So what was more obvious than to commission him with this project? We left the design entirely up to the artist - and we at the Sparkasse are more than satisfied with the result," assured Klaus Diehl, regional director of the Sparkasse.

The likeable artist, who lives in Annweiler and works in his studio there, has indeed created a masterpiece. I thought for a long time about which pair would fit my ideas. Daedalus, the inventive Greek artist and architect, and his son Icarus seemed to me the most suitable role models. They fulfilled a dream with their flight, just like Eschbach with its anniversary. But there should also be a connection to the savings bank: cash donkey - golden donkey. That's why I chose the gold color," Zwick explains with a wink the creation of the golden donkeys. Gold flakes were applied to the animal figures leaf by leaf, then fine gold was poured on and then patinated with color pigments from green earth for a special effect. Icarus, who famously flew too close to the sun during his flight, was given a lighter gold, Daedalus, the experienced, down-to-earth one, a slightly darker patina," says Karl Heinz Zwick. While the Annweiler artist was responsible for the idea and the gilding of the historical couple, Bernd Mohr took over the design of the wings. The creative young artist used a jigsaw to cut the wings out of flexible aluminum.
Mohr works as a metal sculptor in his studio in Landau. There he creates wind chimes, kinetic, wind-powered objects, but also strange-looking animals such as the "Elwedritschen" in the Landau Zoo. They receive just as much attention there as the Eschbach gold donkeys, who clearly enjoyed being admired by the many festival visitors. As a thank you for their recognition, they beamed as brightly as the sun during the anniversary celebrations.
