In the 11th century, a mighty, round residential tower was built in the middle of the castle area. It had a diameter of about 10 m. Such residential towers were up to 30 m high and had several floors inside. In addition to a fireplace and thus a heating option, there were also toilet facilities, mostly rectangular shafts built on the outside or outward-projecting toilet bays. The Neideck residential tower was one of the largest in Franconia.
