While this sign is not in the center of uptown, it is a great reminder that you are in the uptown district. In the mid-1700s, two of our nation’s trading paths crossed in Charlotte and later became Tryon Street and Trade Street. The city grew around this intersection and the only way to get to it from any direction is to go “Uptown”.

In the 1980s, city leaders and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce began promoting the term "Uptown" to give a more positive and vibrant image of the city's central business district. They believed "Uptown" conveyed a sense of progress, prosperity, and elevation, both literally and metaphorically, as the city's center sits on a ridge, the highest point in Mecklenburg County.

Embracing "Uptown" has become a source of local pride, and you'll often hear residents and businesses use it with enthusiasm. It's a unique twist that sets Charlotte apart from other cities!
