The well-preserved coastal fortress in Antirrio is located right at the northern end of the famous Rio-Antirrio Bridge.
The fortress was built in 1499
by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II in just a few months. Together with its counterpart on the other side of the strait (Rio Castle), it was intended to control and defend the access to the Gulf of Corinth. Due to its strategic importance, the two fortresses were also called the "Little Dardanelles".
The complex has a distinctive hexagonal ground plan with polygonal bastions at the corners and walls up to 4 meters thick.
