Tucked away in an alley off Rua da República is one of Évora's most curious churches. Built between 1537 and 1546, it is crowned by four large mythological figures supporting globes meant to symbolize the four corners of the earth and the universal power of King João III. Despite its striking granite exterior, it (apparently) has a very simple interior, as its altarpieces and much of its art were moved to the Igreja de Sao Francisco. It is considered a unique Renaissance building on the Iberian Peninsula and is now listed as a national monument.

Unfortunately, the church is not regularly open to the public. It is part of a monastery located next door, which currently serves as a military mess hall.
