The Ancien Hôtel de Simencourt in Cambrai is a historic mansion built around 1760 by the de Simencourt family. It is considered one of the most beautiful houses in Cambrai and is located on one of the main streets of the city. The hotel even welcomed King Louis XVIII in 1815 on his return from Ghent.
In 1856, the property was bought by the Blériot family. Unfortunately, it was set on fire by German troops in 1918, leaving only the gate1. This gate, richly decorated with floral ornaments and a sun symbol, can still be seen and was restored in 2019.
The hotel is also known as the birthplace of Louis Blériot, the famous aviation pioneer who was the first to cross the Channel in 1909.
