Adelsgatan has probably existed since the 1300s and probably became a thoroughfare from Söderport to the more central parts of the city early on. It really took off as a shopping street when the railway was built on Gotland and the main train station to Visby was located outside Söderport. In the 1970s, however, Adelsgatan lost its position as a leading shopping street.
