An abbess and three nuns from Mexico founded the first women's order in Antigua in 1578. The church, convent and monastery still show the once spacious construction over two blocks and give an idea of the power of the order, whose wealth and reputation surpassed all other sisterhoods in Central America. Women from the wealthy families of Antigua contributed to this in particular.
