The church below the Cathedral that opens onto the small square of the main entrance of the Basilica itself, is called “Soccorpo”, “Lamia dei Morti” or “Cemeterio”. Another name attested in eighteenth-century documentary sources is that of “Church of Santa Croce” because of the homonymous confraternity that took care of it, founded by Monsignor Cavalieri (1690 – 1705) in 1703.
The first descriptive testimony of the cemetery environment appears in the second visit of Filippo Cansacchi, bishop of Gravina, in the years 1639-1640. Along the entire central nave and the lateral spaces there are painted or bas-relief tombstones of bishops, prelates and other public figures, accompanied by coats of arms and inscriptions (the oldest is dated 1531). The bishops buried in the Soccorpo are 8, as attested by the tombstones
