The Church of Santa Caterina in Auronzo di Cadore is a small historical pearl that tells of centuries of faith, art and tradition. The current building, built in 1554 by the Carnic master Nicolò Ruopel, stands on an older structure, dating back to at least 1301, transformed into a chapel before 1388.

The church, with an almost square plan with a pentagonal apse, is preceded by a characteristic portico from 1683, built to offer shelter to wayfarers along the ancient route that crossed the Passo dello Zovo and led towards Comelico.

The interior surprises with its vault with star-shaped ribs, brightly decorated with simple frescoes that create a harmonious and joyful effect. 17th-century pictorial fragments embellish the façade and the apse, where sumptuous “cuoridoro” once stood — refined worked leather coverings, very popular in Venice between the 14th and 18th centuries, which served as decorative and insulating elements, similar to tapestries.

The most precious pictorial work is a tempera canvas attributed to a pupil of Titian, which adds a further touch of artistic prestige to this evocative place of worship, an ideal destination for lovers of history and Cadore traditions.

A perfect stop for those who want to immerse themselves in the tranquility and charm of the Dolomites, along one of the most beautiful routes surrounding Lake Santa Caterina.
