Col Ciampon was in a strategic position, where a small number of soldiers have overcome a large number of enemies from a narrow front. Already in 1848 Pier Fortunato Calvi, during the revolutionary uprisings of Cadore, had built a barricade there and in 1868 about 300 Italian soldiers had stopped 1000 Austrians from Auronzo.
