The originally painted statue is located on the right side of the cathedral, next to the Torrazzo. The statue depicts Giovanni Baldesio, a medieval figure from Cremona, also known as "Zanén de la Bàla" (Zaneen Baldesio with the Three Balls). He dared to challenge Henry IV of the Franks, son of Emperor Henry III, to exempt Cremona from an annual tax consisting of a five-kilogram gold ball. He won the challenge; the city was freed from the burden and became a free commune.

This heroic feat was also immortalized in the city's coat of arms.
