The Wedeler Au flows through a predominantly open meadow landscape from the Hamburg state border to the town of Wedel. Many pastures are extensively grazed by cattle and horses and are only mown in June/July, allowing a high level of biodiversity to develop. Below the dam in Wedel, the Wedeler Au flows through the marsh as a tidal waterway. The Schleswig-Holstein section of the Wedeler Au, with its adjacent meadows, pastures and marsh forests, has been part of the Elbe estuary FFH area since 2007 and is therefore subject to European protection.
