The Sonnenstein Institution Church - also called the Sonnenstein Park Church - is a ruined church building in the Sonnenstein district of Pirna, which is nevertheless worth preserving. With the establishment of the Sonnenstein sanatorium and nursing home, the first institutional church was completed on the overbuilt eastern bastion in 1817. The last service was celebrated in this church on October 31, 1902; it was demolished in 1904. At the end of the 19th century, the decision was made to build a larger church. The second institution church, which still exists today, was built between autumn 1900 and 1902. The church was consecrated on Reformation Day, October 31, 1902. With the establishment of the Pirna-Sonnenstein killing center in 1939, the institution church was closed by state decree and the parish was dissolved in the spring of 1940. During the GDR era, the church (referred to as House 26) was used for various purposes, most recently until 1991 it was a warehouse for what was then VEB Flussmaschinenbau Pirna. This “conversion” of the church prevented the usual decay when it was empty, as the building was kept rainproof. Despite efforts by the Protestant Church in the 1970s, the repairable church was not transferred to it - as the original institutional church, it was state property. The Protestant church then planned and built the Pirna-Sonnenstein parish center with the help of a church building program in the GDR for the Sonnenstein development area that was created at the end of the 1960s. In 1996, a private individual purchased the church without any noticeable improvements to its condition. Occasionally, life briefly returned to the sacred building with cultural events as the “Rosenwerk Cultural Church”. Despite efforts, there is currently no realistic prospect of renovating, preserving and repurposing the church. Wikipedia
