The Fort of Ponta da Bandeira (Forte da Ponta da Bandeira) in Lagos is located at the point where the Bensafrim River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Originally built in the 17th century for the defense against Spain, it was later used to deter attacks by pirates and privateers. It was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake. The fort is owned by the Municipality of Lagos and can be visited for a small fee.

At the time, the fort was probably one of the most technically advanced fortresses in the Algarve. Its quadrangular plan, relatively low volumes and very thick walls in the sections facing the sea were designed for artillery warfare. The moat surrounding the fort is crossed by a drawbridge.
