The Road of Heroes itself is the final 2km stretch from the Galleria d'Havet to the Rifugio Papa (but by extension it also refers to the entire road that climbs from Pian delle Fugazze, crossing the Val di Fieno).

It is a wide, horizontal dirt road, spectacular and panoramic, cutting through the vertical walls of the Val Canale: the view is breathtaking!

During the war, it was merely a narrow mule track, boldly built in 1917 by the Army Corps of Engineers, with sappers abseiling down from above using ropes! Its purpose was to connect the road that climbed the Val di Fieno to the Porte del Pasubio, the immediate rear of the front line; there were plans to make it accessible to vehicles, but the end of the war shelved this idea.

After the war, it was expanded and made accessible to vehicles, also widening the tunnels, thus completing the original project. This allowed convenient access to the summit of Pasubio, declared a Sacred Area of the Fatherland in 1922, as an alternative to the Strada degli Scarubbi (impeded for much of the year due to its northern exposure and persistent snow). At the same time, the eastern façade of the Galleria d'Havet was clad in stone, making it a monumental structure (the western façade was completed in 1988). Fifteen plaques were placed along the road in honor of the Gold Medals for Military Valor who fought on Pasubio in the Great War, and for this reason it was named the "Road of Heroes." It was closed to motorized traffic in the 1980s.

Follow trail 179. It shortens the distance and puts you deeper into the woods. It's certainly less smooth.
