Rudolf I (* 1 May 1218; † 15 July 1291 in Speyer) was Count of Habsburg as Rudolf IV from around 1240 and the first Roman-German king from the Habsburg dynasty from 1273 to 1291.

With the death of Emperor Frederick II in December 1250, the so-called Interregnum began, during which royal rule in the empire was only weakly pronounced. This period saw Rudolf's rise to become one of the most powerful territorial lords in the southwest of the empire. The Interregnum ended with his election as Roman-German king (1273). As king, Rudolf attempted to regain (revindication) the imperial property that had been almost completely lost since around 1240. He was particularly successful in Swabia, Alsace and the Rhineland. The north of the empire, on the other hand, remained largely beyond his reach. Rudolf had to enforce the recognition of his royal rule and the re-indications militarily against the powerful Bohemian King Ottokar. His victory in the Battle of Dürnkrut (1278) established Habsburg rule in Austria and Styria. The House of Habsburg rose to become an imperial princely dynasty. Rudolf recognized the importance of the cities for his own royal rule. However, his tax policy generated considerable urban resistance. Rudolf tried in vain to attain the imperial title and to appoint one of his sons as successor in the Roman-German Empire during his lifetime.
