The Mehlbacher Teich is a legally protected biotope and is surrounded by a mixed forest on one side and a coniferous forest on the other. Around it, there are temporary bodies of water and ponds, which are also considered legally protected habitats. Hornets also find a place to live here in suspended hornet boxes. Often problematic for still waters is the establishment of rapidly spreading non-native plants, so-called neophytes. This is also the case at the Mehlbacher Teich: The fast-growing Japanese knotweed, introduced as an ornamental plant, displaces other plants and thus endangers the ecological balance.
