The Selbitz rises at around 635 m above sea level in a pond northwest of the Helmbrechts district of Wüstenselbitz, and flows around Helmbrechts first in an easterly direction and then in a northerly direction. On its further course, it touches or flows through the towns of Schauenstein, Selbitz and Naila, mainly in a northerly direction. It then flows through the Höllental, which is cut up to 170 meters deep into the diabase rock, between Hölle and Blechschmidtenhammer.
