View of Pötenitzer Wiek

Coming from the Baltic Sea across the isthmus at Priwall, the state border between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein runs along the eastern shore of the Pötenitzer Wiek, around Lake Dassow and the Untertrave River to Schlutup. Until 1989, this was the inner-German border. Today, three nature reserves and two European protected areas exist here. Lake Dassow was designated a nature reserve as early as 1982. A real paradise for many rare plant and animal species is the nature reserve "Südlicher Priwall" with the adjacent shallow water zones of the Pötenitzer Wiek, a haff-like extension in the Traveförde.
