Governor Island sits just offshore from Bicheno, close enough that you can really take in its rugged granite shape from the foreshore. The island and surrounding waters form part of the Governor Island Marine Nature Reserve, an important seabird breeding area and protected marine habitat. Keep an eye on the rocks too, as this stretch of coast is known for plenty of bird activity around the island and nearby Alligator Rock.
