Hidden in the southern forests of Somogy County lies this tiny settlement, which was previously known mostly as Kaszópuszta. To the west lies Lake Baláta, which has a rich fauna in addition to the rare carnivorous plant Aldrovanda vesiculosa. Since 1994, the settlement, which most recently had 83 inhabitants, has been allowed to bear the name Kaszó. Its popularity is mainly due to the abundance of game in the surrounding forests, which makes the region one of Hungary's best hunting areas.

Kaszó was first mentioned in writing in 1398 in a document by King Zsigmond dated May 5th. In 1519 István Báthori was elected Count Palatine of the area. The Turkish period followed, during which Somogy County in particular was almost depopulated and villages disappeared without a trace. In 1715 the area was owned by Count Tamás Nádasy. Somogyszob, the largest settlement at the time, had only eight households. During the Habsburg Monarchy, the area was a popular hunting area, and the Viennese nobility also came here to hunt. In 1911, Duke Hohenlohe bought large estates here and received many distinguished guests in his hunting lodge in Kaszó.
