Behind the Plothener ponds there is an interesting genesis. They were created by monks in the Middle Ages to meet the great demand for fish, which must have been enormous, especially during the many days of fasting. Over the course of time, around 1,600 ponds came together within a radius of five kilometers, which is why the area is still called the "land of a thousand ponds". Many of the ponds have been merged over time, the largest today is the house pond with an area of 28 hectares. Meanwhile, the entire area is designated as a nature reserve and offers various plants and many animals, especially birds, a home.
If you want to take a break, visit the 300-year-old stilt house in the Hausteich, the landmark of the area where there is a small museum.
