Bike Touring Highlight
It took a while for the people of Karlsruhe to get used to the fact that the road was replaced by rails with grass. But the result is worth it!The slaughterhouse opened in 1897 and was in operation until 2006. Today "creative park". In 2007 the slaughterhouse restaurant was opened and the Tollhaus cultural center expanded. The Schweinmarkthalle has been used for events since 2010.
The Substage music club is also located here. Which had to give way to the construction site for the subway in its old place (in a former underpass).
The human rights center on Durlacher Allee has been there for a long time.Efforts are being made to preserve the character of the slaughterhouse. For example, part of the conveyor belt for beef and pork halves can still be seen. The renovation with new use is not yet complete (as of 2020), but it is already a nice place to explore or to spend your free time.

At that time, the city supported the reconstruction of the new "old slaughterhouse" with about 2.6 million euros.
In addition to some other work, the money was u.a. invested in setting up about 70 overseas containers, which have since served as workplaces for active business start-ups. Today, the entire slaughterhouse area is managed by a cooperation of various city development, cultural and economic development institutions of the city. Many of the 19th-century industrial and commercial buildings are listed and will continue to testify to the former use of the area. Newly built buildings should consciously stand out from the architecture of the old buildings.
