FORT I of Jan III Sobieski (Prince Wilhelm I von Preußen) was built in the years 1888-1892 on a quadrangular plan. It is the only armoured fort not only within the fortress, but also in the entire eastern part of the Second Reich. The fort's armament consists of an armoured battery of 4 21 cm H.P.T. 90 type howitzers. The entire facility was designed for a crew of 200 infantrymen, 152 artillerymen and 6 sappers. The fort's command consisted of 13 officers. It had battery service rooms, command offices, latrines, engine room, kitchens. Access to the fortress buildings was protected by an oval gorge caponier (from the side of the barracks) and bunkers located on the fort's embankment (these bunkers simultaneously led to observation posts and battery service posts). The entire fort is surrounded by a counterscarp rampart with a dry moat. In 1905, the first battery of rapid-fire guns in Toruń was installed on the fort's premises. In 1911, the entire fort was surrounded by barbed wire. After 1956, some of the brick elements were dismantled - the moat walls, partly the anti-scarp caponiers, stables, the bunker of the left wing battery, and one of the armored towers was destroyed.
