The porticoes of the "Ripa Maris", later called Sottoripa, are the oldest public porticoes known to exist in Italy: they were in fact started between 1125 and 1133 on the initiative of the consuls of the Municipality.
Having immediately become one of the most popular places in the city, the street was built specifically to create the spaces necessary for port trade: it hosted shops, artisan workshops and warehouses in which goods were stored just unloaded from ships or waiting to be shipped overseas.
