Mašun (1025 m above sea level) is a hamlet (and road pass) on the northwestern part of the Snežnik mountain plateau. It is surrounded by vast forests and represents the junction of road connections between the municipalities of Cerknica, Ilirska Bistrica, Pivka and Loška dolina. There is a 1,700-meter-long forest learning trail nearby, and the Ciglarjeva pot, as the Slovenian part of the European footpath E-6 is called, runs along it. The area of Mašun is protected by the state as a landscape park.

On the eastern side of the Mašun forest reserve stand the towers of the former hunting lodge. The original building was built in 1874 for the purposes of forestry personnel. Farmers, who believed that the new control would deprive them of their rights to wood in the forests, demolished the aforementioned building that same year. The house was rebuilt, and in 1875 the forester A. Satran settled there. In 1888, a nature park was established on Mašun. The building has suffered several disasters in its history, including being destroyed by fire in 1919. The rebuilt building became a hunting lodge. In November 1943, the lodge burned down again. Of the entire complex, only two towers, built in the romantic style, have survived.
